THE SHARE OF FOOD EXPENDITURE AS AN INDICATOR OF WELL-BEING OF SOCIETY

The dependence between the share of food spending in the total household expenditures and the level of society welfare is considered in the article. The ratio of spending on “food at home” to total consumer expenditures or per capita income is considered as an indicator of the share of expenditures. The data of systems of national accounts (SNA) is used. The study is conducted by the methods both horizontal and vertical section. When using the method of horizontal section, the ratio of the share of expenditures on food products with the average per capita level of gross domestic income (PSD) at purchasing power parity (PPP) for one time period across 46 countries is compared. When using the vertical section method (time series), the ratio between the share of food costs and the level of total consumer spending over a long period (70 years) is compared. It is established that there is a close relationship between the level of well-being and the level of food expenditures, and the level of confidence is higher when conducting a time series study. The proposed power and logarithmic models provide a high level of reliability. The reasons for the deviation of indicators for some countries are considered, countries with an anomalous level of the share of food expenditure are identified. Actual indicators of the share of food expenses in Ukraine correspond to model indicators with high precision. An estimate of the elasticity of demand for food products at a level of average per capita income above average is made. It is established that the value of the coefficient of elasticity of demand for income does not exceed 0.1 for countries with a high level of wealth, which means a very low elasticity of demand starting from a certain level of income. The results obtained in the study allow substantiating the possibility of using the indicator of share of food expenditures in total household spending as a criterion for assessing the level of well-being of society.
